Posted by Andru Edwards Categories: Smartphones, Handhelds, Rumors,

Verizon Nexus PrimeThose waiting on the next big Android Nexus device won't have to wait that much longer, as we've just learned that the Nexus Prime--which will be the first phone to rock Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich--will be launching in October exclusively on Verizon Wireless. Of course, we expect the iPhone 5 to also launch in October on AT&T, Verizon, and possible Sprint and T-Mobile as well. Verizon wants to be the only carrier selling both the next-gen iPhone and the next-gen Android smartphone at the same time.

iPhone 5 coming to Sprint in October according to WSJ

iPhone 5 sprint

The Wall Street Journal is reporting that Sprint will be selling the iPhone 5 (alongside AT&T and Verizon) when it launches in "mid-October." In addition, they'll also sell the updated iPhone 4 model that Apple will be selling at a lower price (likely an 8 GB model.) This is great for Sprint and great for Apple, because if the report holds true, it'll give Sprint a much-needed shot in the arm to sell both the new iPhone model as well as the lower-cost iPhone 4. As for Apple, it gives them play on yet another American carrier, which means more marketshare. We'll be keeping our ears on this one, and will let you know what more we hear on this.

Holding out for the iPhone 5? There's some strong temptation coming out of South Korea at the end of the month: the Samsung Galaxy S II.

An announcement for the super-slim, super-powerful, and super-popular Android smartphone is expected on August 29. Samsung sent out invitations for a "major product announcement" in New York that day and on Friday, Samsung Mobile U.S. tweeted: "Samsung Update: Hey Guys! Big announcement on the 29th ; )"

The Samsung Galaxy S II is Samsung's fastest- selling smartphone to date, based on its April debut in South Korea and parts of Europe, selling one every three seconds between April and July.

Verizon CFO is “disappointed” that iPhone 5 is not available yet

iPhone 5

With so many iPhone 5 rumors floating around, it's refreshing to hear one from an honest-to-goodness Apple partner speaking on the record. So mark it down in your rumor book that Verizon thought the next-generation Apple smartphone would be released in June but is now expecting it to arrive this fall.

"Obviously we're disappointed that the iPhone 5 didn't come out in June … we continue to prepare for it and when that comes we'll be ready," Verizon CFO Fran Shammo said this week on a webcast spotted by Channel Partners Online Thursday.

Speaking at the Oppenheimer Technology & Communications Conference, Shammo said it's likely that the much-anticipated iPhone will finally make its debut in the fall, which is in line with persistent rumors of a September or October release date—though; the Verizon exec "isn't ready to stake his life on it," according ot Channel Partners Online.

Verizon claims northeast outage was due to sabotage

Verizon outageThe second day of the strike by 45,000 Verizon union employees turned ugly, with Verizon claiming 12 acts of sabotage against its communications facilities.

Union workers, meanwhile, said Verizon non-union employees had struck union workers with their vehicles, according to the Web site of the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers, one of the unions involved in the strike.

About 45,000 employees, members of the Communications Workers of America (CWA) and the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers (IBEW) could not find common ground in negotiations, and the union leaders called a strike, which began Sunday at 6 AM, according to NJ.com.

Blackberry bold 9930

We just got a tip that is telling us to expect Verizon Wireless to release the upcoming touchscreen BlackBerry Bold 9930 on August 11, just ten days from now. A few days ago, Verizon accidentally posted a video of the 9930 on its Web site when it meant to post a video of the BlackBerry Bold 9650 instead. We've been expecting an imminent release of the 9930, so we could definitely see this rumor panning out. Of course, we don't know until things are officially official.

Unboxing Live 072: Verizon 4G LTE MiFi Mobile Hotspot

We open up the Verizon 4G LTE MiFi hotspot in this episode of Unboxing Live. The MiFI is a portable Wi-Fi hotspot that connects to Verizon's vast 4G LTE network at speeds that meet, or in some cases, exceed, the typical home broadband speeds that we are all used to. You can connect up to five devices to the network that the MiFi creates, allowing you fast Internet access on the go, anywhere within Verizon's 4G footprint. Leave a 4G area, and the MiFi will drop down to 3G speeds, which is a nice backup, and not something that all current 4G hotspots offer. It also has a low power e-ink display to show the status of the connection and battery life, something Samsung's SCH-LC11 4G hotspot surprisingly left out.

Big thanks to our sponsor - GoToMeeting makes it easy to collaborate with anyone, anywhere - and they have just released their new HD faces feature that lets you see the webcams of up to 6 users as a time, which means you're collaborating face-to-face. Samsung Galaxy S II Function on Verizon will support 4G LTE

Samsung Function

We know that many of you are waiting on the Samsung Function, Verizon's version of the Galaxy S II, to hit stores. While we still don't have a solid release date, what we do have at least is information directly from Verizon (by way of Twitter) confirming that the Function will support their 4G LTE network. Kinda makes the wait a little more unbearable, right?

Edit: Whoops. Looks like someone at VZW jumped the gun, because now they are taking it back and saying that they were referring to the Galaxy Tab 10.1 instead.

Verizon launching 4G LTE Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1 on July 28

Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1 LTE 4G

If you've been hoping for a Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1, but need to get that blazing fast 4G LTE as part of the package, then July 28 is your day. Verizon Wireless has been spreading 4G LTE across the nation, and we know that it's definitely quick, and now you can get Samsung's latest tablet with an LTE antenna built right in. There'll be two models available in white and gray, and the pricing is a bit ridiculous (even with two-year contract.) We're looking at $529.99 for the 16 GB model, and $629.99 for the 32 GB alternative. Data plans start at $30 per month for 2 GB of service. It's a pretty penny, but that's what you get for not being able to kick that early adopter habit, ya know?

Verizon LTE smartphones won’t roam on AT&T LTE, and vice versa

4G LTE roaming

Thinking of unlocking a Verizon Wireless LTE phone for use on AT&T's network, or vice versa? Think again. Verizon Wireless confirmed today that its LTE phones will not "be compatible on other LTE networks in the U.S." because "the phones will be on different frequencies," according to Verizon spokeswoman Brenda Raney.

The new 4G LTE system used by Verizon, MetroPCS, and soon AT&T runs on SIM cards much like the ones for GSM networks, and GSM phone owners are used to being able to switch phones from network to network, as long as they're unlocked.

But Verizon may be designing its phones to only run on Verizon's very specific wireless frequency, locking out all other possible carriers. Verizon and AT&T both run their LTE networks in the 700-MHz band. But Verizon's network is mostly in 746-787MHz, while AT&T's will be primarily in 704-746MHz. Some Verizon and AT&T spectrum overlaps in an area called the "lower B block," but not much. Verizon could build its phones to exclude AT&T's frequencies, and vice versa.
